Overview
The OSHA and Altec Alliance focuses on providing information, guidance, and access to training resources to help protect employees' health and safety, including non-English or limited English speaking workers; the Alliance addresses the safe operation of cranes, digger derricks, and insulated and non-insulated aerial devices, including tree care devices, and industry hazards such as falls and electrocutions.

Training and Education Goal
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise to develop training and education programs in English and Spanish, on the safe operation and proper use of cranes, digger derricks, and insulated, non-insulated and aerial devices, including tree care devices.
The OSHA and Altec Alliance Implementation Team has not started work on programs or projects to address this goal.
Outreach and Communication Goals
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, including electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and Altec's Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.

Publications and Newsletters
Articles on the OSHA and Altec Alliance appeared in print and online publications, including: BNA Occupational Safety and Health Reporter; Birmingham News and Facilities Management. For more information on the articles, please see the Alliance Program Reach table on page 5.
OSHA and Altec Alliance Web Page
OSHA created an OSHA and Altec Alliance Web page on the Agency's Web site. The page includes a copy of the OSHA and Altec Alliance agreement, a photograph of the signing ceremony, news release, activities and events; products and resources. The page averaged 480 visitors per month during 2006.
Altec Safer and Smarter Web Site
Altec updated its Safer and Smarter Web page on its Web site with links to the OSHA Web site and the OSHA and Altec Alliance Web page on the Agency's Web site.
OSHA Safety and Health Topics Pages
Joshua Chard, Director, Product and Corporate Safety, Altec Industries, Inc., serves on the editorial boards for the following OSHA Safety and Health Topics pages:

Altec Safety Tips Sheets
Altec developed, with input from OSHA, four draft safety tips sheets that address operator training requirements; general safety topics for aerial devices and safety tips to prevent electrocutions:

- Safety Tips Sheet: Aerial Devices - Vehicle-mounted Elevating and Rotating Platforms. The Tips Sheet discusses safety issues related to vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating work platforms prior to their use and during their operation.
- Safety Tips Sheet: Aerial Equipment Electrical Hazards. The Tips Sheet discusses electrical hazards associated with operating aerial equipment.
- Safety Tips Sheet: Training of Operators of Elevating Equipment. The Tips Sheet provides general training information for operators of elevating equipment.
- Safety Tips Sheet: OSHA Regulations Regarding Training of Operators of Aerial Devices and Digger Derricks. The Tips Sheet provides information on OSHA regulations regarding the training requirements for operators of aerial devices and digger derricks.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or industry-related conferences, local meetings or other events.

Altec Outreach Opportunities
Through the OSHA and Altec Alliance, OSHA provided Altec with numerous copies of four of the Agency's QuickCards: Tree Trimming and Removal Safety Tips; Protect Yourself Crane Safety; Aerial Lifts Safety Tips and Chain Saw Safety Tips and the OSHA and Altec Alliance Activities Summary. The publications were distributed by Altec company representatives from its exhibit booth during the following events:

Products
Safe Operation of Insulated and Non-Insulated Aerial Device Training Seminars
Through the Alliance, Josh Chard, Manager, Prevention and Product Safety and Ron Beach, Sentry Safety Program Manager, conducted safety training seminars for OSHA Regional and Area Office staff and other safety and health professionals throughout the United States. Altec created and conducted the training seminar, Safe Operation of Insulated and Non-Insulated Aerial Devices, for OSHA staff and others based on the training materials that the company developed through it safety program, Altec Sentry Program. Topics discussed during the one day training seminars include: best practices and safe operation of insulated and non-insulated aerial devices; issues related to minimum approach distances to energized sources and the prevention of electrocutions. In addition, Altec is providing equipment that the training seminars' attendees are using during the hands-on demonstrations. The following seminars have been conducted:

Promoting the National Dialogue Goal
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings to address safety and health issues such as the safe use of cranes, digger derricks and aerial devices and hazards such as falls and electrocutions to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

- Executive Summary
Through the OSHA and Altec Alliance, the organizations have established an excellent working relationship. During the reporting period, OSHA and Altec worked on a number of projects to share and distribute safety and health information regarding cranes, insulated and non-insulated aerial devices and digger derricks.
For example, OSHA and Altec provided online safety and health information through the organizations' Web sites. OSHA created an OSHA and Altec Alliance Web page on the Agency's Web site. The page includes a copy of the OSHA and Altec Alliance agreement, a photograph of the signing ceremony, activities and events; and products and resources. The page averaged 480 visitors per month during 2006. In addition, Altec created links from its Safer and Smarter Web page on its Web site to the OSHA and Altec Alliance Web page and to the OSHA Web site.
In addition, Josh Chard is on the editorial boards for OSHA's Safety and Health Topics pages: Crane, Derrick and Hoist Safety; Electrical Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution; and Tree Care Industry. He is sharing industry expertise and information in this role.
Through the Alliance, Altec distributed OSHA safety and health information including OSHA QuickCards on: Tree Trimming and Removal Safety Tips; Protect Yourself Crane Safety; Aerial Lifts Safety Tips and Chain Saw Safety Tips from its exhibit booth at a number of events during 2006.

- Upcoming Milestones
In the next year of the Alliance, OSHA and Altec will continue to work together to promote safety and health in the workplace and the OSHA and Altec Alliance through exhibiting and speaking opportunities at trade shows and conferences.
In addition, the OSHA and Altec Alliance will build on the success of the Safe Operation of Cranes, Insulated and Non-Insulated Aerial Devices and Digger Derrick Training Seminars conducted by Altec in 2006 and present additional seminars at locations in OSHA's Regions, including November 29, 2006 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The OSHA and Altec Alliance implementation team will also be developing a number of other projects including creating three safety fact sheets on Crane Safety, Falls and Training Requirements.
In addition, an Altec representative will continue to serve on OSHA's Safety and Health Topics Pages for Crane, Derrick and Hoist Safety; Electrical Power Generation, Transmission and Distribution and Tree Care Industry. In addition, Altec representatives may work with OSHA to help develop the agency's Powered Industrial Truck eTool.
