Description: The theme for this year's Workers' Memorial Day program is toxic chemical exposure. The program includes remarks being delivered by Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Director Dr. John Howard. It also includes a panel with worker/industry/healthcare representatives about their experiences with chemical exposure in the workplace. Following this, employees will observe a moment of silence as we call to mind the workers and families whose loss motivates our steadfast mission to fight on so that every job in this nation is a safe job. Finally, attendees will gather at the site of the American dogwood tree that was planted in 2011 on the lawn in Veterans' Plaza for a brief ceremony honoring workers who have died on the job.

Description: OSHA's Cleveland Area Office Director Howie Eberts and a senior safety specialist will be speaking at a Workers' Memorial Day ceremony to honor workers who lost their lives on the job. Representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and local U.S. Congresswoman Betty Sutton will also participate. Akron's mayor and Summit County's chief executive will sign proclamations recognizing Workers' Memorial Day and OSHA.

Event: 72nd Annual Wisconsin Safety and Health Conference

Description: OSHA will showcase an exhibit and display a PowerPoint presentation identifying victims of workplace incidents across Wisconsin, along with a brief description of the incident. The final Wisconsin Safety and Health Conference brochure features a section commemorating Workers' Memorial Day. It will be mailed to thousands of Wisconsin employers.

Description: In honor and remembrance of all construction workers who lost their lives on construction jobsites, OSHA's REGION VI Office, the Hispanic Contractors Association de Tejas, Texas Engineering Extension Services, and DCCCD Richland College Garland Campus will be co-hosting the "OSHA 10-hour Marathon" Safety Training. This program is designed for construction workers, foremen, jobsite superintendents, project managers, and anyone involved in the construction industry. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an OSHA 10-hour construction outreach card on the same day.


El Paso Area Office

Description: OSHA's Oakland Area Office is working with the Michael Chavez Center, Monument Community Partnership to organize a pre-Workers' Memorial Day kick-off event. This program will include educational and training programs for day labor, migrant, and young Latino workers in Contra Costa County, Calif., and surrounding communities. OSHA plans to work with the Center to develop outreach and educational strategies for vulnerable workers to help prevent workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Workers will receive training on fall protection, heat illness prevention, and occupational safety and health laws, including worker rights and employer responsibilities. The Wage and Hour Division, EEOC, San Francisco Job Corps, San Francisco Mexican Consulate, and various other community groups have also been invited to participate and share information at this educational and outreach event.
