ALLIANCE ANNUAL REPORT

Overview

To foster a cooperative relationship between OSHA and Gulf Coast Safety Institute (GCSI) hereby form an Alliance to provide Houston area small business owners and others with information, guidance, and access to training that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to occupational hazards.

  3. Implementation Team Meetings
    1. The Houston South Area Office’s (HSAO) Compliance Assistance Specialists (CAS) attended the monthly Occupational Safety Committee meetings and additional alliance meetings as needed.
  4. Events and Products
    1. The information brochure will be sent to the UH Small Business Administration office for the September date – September 19th.
  5. Training and Education
    1. January: Student’s Professional Development & Leadership Conference. Room block has been completed at Travel Lodge for 20 rooms (80 pp)
    2. February: 8th – Presented a 4-hour session on “Slips, Trips & Falls” for the Risk Management Institute
    3. November: The first Small Business Class was given!!! We had 6 attendees. Good interaction and Q&A sessions by attendees.
    4. April: 4th – Conducted a “Principles of Safety” class (4-hour) for the Risk Management Institute.
    5. November: 5th: The first Small Business Class was given!!! We had 6 attendees. Good interaction and Q&A sessions by attendees.
    6. November: 12th – Held the Small Business Alliance course. We had 6 participants from 5 companies. Attendees gave good feedback on the course.
    7. November: 21st - Conducted an “OSHA Recordkeeping” class (4-hour) for the Risk Management Institute.
    Outreach and Communication
    1. January: 21st – Attended the ABC Houston Safety Committee Meeting.
    2. February: 21st - Attended the Houston ABC Safety Committee Meeting.
    3. April: 28th - Attended the Houston ABC Safety Committee Meeting. GCSI provided the safety topic – fire extinguisher training. The course was presented by Bill Roy, Cindy Lewis and Guinn Sharpe.
    4. April: 13th-16th – Attended the Region VI Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association (VPPPA) Conference in San Antonio, Texas. GCSI had a booth display at the conference in the Exhibit Hall were we displayed all companies (to date)

    6. August: 5th – Assisted Jeff Oakley with the GCSI booth at the ASSE Region III Professional Development Conference at the Marriott Westchase in Houston, Texas. Show attendance was 235 people. Attendance was slightly down due to Tropical Storm Edouard.
    7. September: 29th – Attended ABC-Houston Safety Committee meeting. Discussion about a safety research project was initiated at this meeting.
    8. November: 6th – Attended meeting with ABC-Houston with Jeff Oakley to discuss a potential research project in partnership with ABC-Houston Safety Committee.
    9. November: 10th – Met with COM IT Dept to discuss equipment and technology needs to begin safety Webinars to support the GCSI Outreach initiatives and the Small Business Alliance.
    10. November 17th: Attended the ABC-Houston Safety Committee meeting to present the research project being developed between GCSI and ABC-Houston.

    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
    • March: 31st Attended the National Safety Council/Texas Safety Council annual conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. GCSI had a booth in the Exhibit Hall.
    • April: 1st Attended the National Safety Council/Texas Safety Council annual conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. GCSI had a booth in the Exhibit Hall.
    • April: 17th – Attended the Houston Business Roundtable Safety Meeting.
    • August: 24th-27th – Attended the Voluntary Protection Program Participants Association (VPPPA) National Conference held in Anaheim California
  6. Results
    Note: Many of the Small Business classes had to be postponed due to Hurricane Ike.
    The OSHA - GCSI Alliance flyer is displayed in the HSAO as well as available at each speech and presentation.

  7. Upcoming Milestones
    GCSI is working together with OSHA, OSHCON in order to conduct outreach capabilities to the Manufacturing Industry in the Houston area as well as initiated a research project with the local Houston ABC Office.
