    Alliance Overview

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), The Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Polk County and the University of South Florida’s SafetyFlorida Onsite Consultation Program agreed to establish an Alliance to reduce and prevent employees’ exposure to falls, electrical, struck-by, caught-in-between and amputation hazards, as well as hazardous chemicals such as lead and silica. Emphasis will also be placed on effectively communicating these issues to hard-to-reach groups (Small Businesses, non-English speaking and youth workers).

    Implementation Team Membership and Contributors

    Team members include representatives from OSHA, the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Polk County (PRCCPC) and USF SafetyFlorida Onsite Consultation Program.

  2. Implementation Team Meetings

    OSHA, the PRCCPC and the USF SafetyFlorida Onsite Consultation Program have coordinated event participation by telephone.  However, the group did not conduct any formal planning meeting during this period.

    Events

    • On July 26, 2009, OSHA and the USF-Safety Florida Consultation Program participated in the PRCCPC’s "Celebration of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico" Community Festival. During the event participants were provided a wide range of outreach material from the OSHA/ USF-Safety Florida Consultation Program booth, including Quick Cards, Fact Sheets on fall hazards, amputations, $afety Pays, as well as material on the development and implementation of an effective safety health and management system (SHMS). More than 200 attendees participated in this outreach event.

    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events

    • The PRCCPC was notified of the National Action Summit for Latino Worker Health & Safety Conference conducted on April 14 – 15, 2010, in Houston, TX.
    • On August 10, 2009, the PRCCPC Alliance was promoted during a meeting with the members of the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce, which was focused on the Hispanic Small Business Initiatives led by the Small Business Development Center in Ft. Myers, FL.
    • On September 11, 2009, the PRCCPC Alliance was promoted during the Small Business Administration Government Outreach Program in Orlando, FL. A representative from the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund was the featured speaker at this event.
    • On March 8, 2010, the PRCCPC Alliance was promoted during a meeting with the Mexican Consulate of Orlando, Florida.
    • During this period the PRCCPC Alliance promoted during a meeting with the Gulf Coast Chapter of ABC, which was focused "Providing Effective Safety and Health Training to Spanish Speaking Workers."

  5. Upcoming Milestones for 2011

    • Conduct Safety Seminars throughout the year focused on areas of concern, which are identified by the Alliance group.
    • Continue to effectively promote the PRCCPC Alliance during conferences, seminars, as well as fairs throughout Polk and adjacent area.
    • Continue to encourage small businesses in Central Florida to develop and implement effective Safety and Health Management Systems (SHMS)
