    Overview: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (LC) and the University of South Florida SafetyFlorida Consultation Program (USF) agreed to establish an Alliance to protect employees' health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to prevalent hazards in the construction and general industries, including hazards related to falls, electrical operations, ergonomics, bloodborne diseases, fire safety, egress/exit routes and evacuation plans. Emphasis was also placed on effectively communicating these issues to hard-to-reach groups, such as small employers, Hispanics and teen workers.

    Implementation Team Membership:

    Representatives from OSHA, the LC and USF conducted all required quarterly meetings.

    January 28, 2009 - March 8, 2010

     
  2. Implementation Team Meetings:

    Jan. – March, 2009 - Held meeting with the Gulf Latin Chamber of Commerce in Sarasota and discussed our implementation strategies for the Alliance recently signed. Our planned strategy was presented to the Chamber’s Board and approved.

    April – June, 2009 - Held meeting with the Gulf Latin Chamber of Commerce in Sarasota and discussed our implementation strategies for the Alliance recently signed.

    • July 16, 2009 - Conducted “office safety” presentation at a “Lunch and Learn” sponsored by the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce and our active Alliance in Parrish, FL.
    • July 8, 2009 - Conducted a safety seminar in Sarasota, Florida, as part of our Alliance with the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce. Topics discussed included: Safety and Health Management Systems, Office Safety and OSHA’s Onsite Consultation Program.
    • Assisted in the distribution of safety & health outreach material such as the Region IV Photo and Struck-by CDs, Tool Box Reviews, MAD IV Roofing and Carpentry Toolbox Reviews and OSHA Quick Cards

    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events

     
    • This Alliance has been promoted to the Mexican Consulate of Orlando and the Hispanic Business Initiative Fund (offices in Orlando and Tampa). Both agencies have agreed to create Alliances to educate Hispanic employers and employees.
    • This Alliance has been promoted at various OSHA presentations to the Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers and Cape Canaveral chapters of the ASSE, AGC and ABC Associations throughout the year.

  5. Upcoming Milestones:
     
    • Continue to promote occupational safety and health in the Central Florida Area.
    • Continue to promote safety and health management systems to Central Florida Small Businesses.
    • Develop ways of communicating such information (e.g. print, such as the LC newsletter and electronic media, such as the OSHA Region IV e-newsletter, as well as electronic assistance tools) to the Hispanic and non-Hispanic community of Manatee and Sarasota Counties.
    • OSHA will continue to speak, exhibit, or appear at the chamber events and meetings.
