Overview:
OSHA, Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Occupational Safety and Health Division Consultation Program (GTRI) and the Southeastern Wood Producer’s Association (SWPA) formed an Alliance to provide members and others in the logging industry with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to struck-by hazards, amputations and overhead power lines.

Events
Since implementing this agreement OSHA representatives in Georgia and Florida have participated in the Continuing Logger Education (CLE) courses conducted by the SWPA, as well as the Master Timber Harvester Program.
The Master Timber Harvester (MTH) Program is administered by the Georgia Forestry Commission, as a logger education program through the University of Georgia’s Center for Forest Business. The program’s objective is to foster improvements in the professionalism of wood producers by focusing on the environment, business and safety. Below is a list of the courses supported by OSHA and the SWPA Alliance group:
- On November 4, 2009, an OSHA CAS provided safety and health training during the Master Timber Harvester training course in Forsyth, GA.
- On November 18, 2009, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Claxton, GA.
- On December 2, 2009, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Louisville, GA.
- On March 24, 2010, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Swainsboro, GA.
- On July 21, 2010, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Tifton, GA.
- On September 15, 2010, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Washington, GA.
- On October 15, 2010, OSHA supported the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program conducted in Calhoun, GA.
- On November 10, 2010, an OSHA CAS provided safety and health training during the Master Timber Harvester training course in Forsyth, GA.

- The SWPA has developed a link, on its web site to the OSHA Onsite Consultation Program’s ConNect web site, which was developed for the benefit of small businesses - https://secure.consultationconnection.com/.
- The OSHA Alliance is promoted in the SWPA’s bi-monthly publication, “Out of the Woods.” The magazine is available online at the following web site - http://www.sewpa.com/swpamagazine.html.
- The SWPA continued to promote the CLE events, which OSHA supports, on the organization’s CLE web page - http://www.swpa.ag/cle.html.
- The SWPA continues to maintain links on its web site to the OSHA Logging Page and other regulatory resources - http://www.sewpa.com/caution_ahead.html.

- Upcoming Milestones in FY 2008-2009
- OSHA, Georgia Tech Research Institute’s Occupational Safety and Health Division Consultation Program (GTRI) and the Southeastern Wood Producer’s Association (SWPA) will renew the current Alliance agreement.
- OSHA will continue to support the SWPA Continuing Logger Education (CLE) Program.
- OSHA will continue to support the Master Timber Harvester Program.
