I. Alliance Background

Overview:

OSHA and Athens Tech hereby form an Alliance to provide Athens Tech students, business partners and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly hard-to-reach and youth workers in reducing and preventing exposure to hazards during operations involving powered industrial trucks, lockout/tagout, bloodborne pathogens, electrical, hazards communications, machine guarding and confined space.

II. Implementation Team Memberships and Contributors:

The Implementation Team included representatives from OSHA and Athens Tech. These meetings were conducted as scheduled on Quarterly Meeting: 6/16/05, 9/14/05 and 12/7/06.

December 15, 2004, through December 15, 2005

Training and Education

Events

  • Conducted over 1,721 student-hours of safety training.
  • Trained 942 students
  • Held 52 safety training classes. The training topics included the following:
    • New Hire Safety
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • HAZWOPER
    • Electrical Safety
    • Forklift Safety
    • Emergency Action Plan
    • Portable Fire Extinguisher
    • Fire Watch
    • Respirator Safety
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Hazard Communications
    • Fall Protection
    • Confined Space
    • OSHA Recordkeeping
    • Machine Guarding

Products

  • Signed up 146 companies to be represented by The Safety Academy
  • Developed written safety procedures for 74 companies

Outreach and Communication

Events

  • Visited over 100 local companies to identify hard-to-reach and youth workers
  • Participated in several conferences and events to promote industrial safety, including the following:
    - Athens Clarke County Expo
    - Athens Employer Committee Job Fair
    - Broad River Employer Committee Briefing
    - Employer Meetings and Safety Discussions

Products

  • Developed a safety brochure with the school’s safety training schedules, which was mass mailed to over 800
  • Developed an informational email with the school’s safety training schedules, which was forwarded as a mass email

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2007

  • Conduct (not just offer) the school’s first outdoor power line safety session for landscape companies
  • Conduct the school’s first safety class in Spanish for landscape employees.
  • Continue our outreach and education efforts
  • Increase the new members companies in Elbert, Greene, and Clarke Counties
  • Expand the range of new hire and continuing education training focused on safety and health offered to employers
  • Renew the Alliance in December 2006
