I. Alliance Background

Overview
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Georgia Institute of Technology –Safety,
Health, and Environmental Technology Division (Georgia Tech) and American Society of Safety
Engineers (ASSE) – Trench Safety Task Force Alliance is focused on reducing and preventing exposure
to trenching and excavation hazards.
II. Implementation Team and Contributors:
Metro Atlanta Area - Representatives from OSHA, ASSE and Georgia Tech conducted all required
quarterly meeting by teleconferencing, formal meetings and training sessions on the following dates:
7/13/06, 8/11/06 and 9/15/06.
Savannah Area - Representatives from the ASSE, as well as OSHA’s Regional and Savannah Area Offices
held a meeting on 9/12/05, 4/10/06, 5/08/06 and 7/10/06.

September 21, 2005, through September 21, 2006

Training and Education
Events
- OSHA Savannah Area Office and the Savannah Chapter - ASSE held trenching training sessions
3/10/06 and 10/27/06.
- Alliance member participated in two OTI - 3010 Course, "Excavation,
Trenching and Soil Mechanics" offered by Georgia Tech’s OSHA Ed Center. The total enrollment for these two courses
was 87 students
- Alliance member participated in two free Construction Safety and Health Seminars offered by
Georgia Tech’s OSHA Ed Center. The total enrollment for these two seminars was 68 students
- Alliance members, OSHA and ASSE Trench Task Force, participated in the OTI - 500 Course,
Construction Update, conducted by Georgia Tech

Outreach and Communication
Events
- Metro-Atlanta OSHA representative conducted a presentation on the Alliance during the October
10 -12, 2006, Georgia Safety, Health and Environmental Conference
- Metro-Atlanta OSHA representative conducted a presentation on the Alliance and Trenching Safety
during the March 23, 2006, Georgia Utility Contractors Association (GUCA) - Spring Conference
- Metro-Atlanta OSHA representative conducted numerous safety and health presentation during this
period highlighting the Alliance and outreach material developed by the group
- Metro-Atlanta OSHA representative promoted the Alliance during the Association of General
Contractors (AGC) – Georgia Chapter, Annual Super Friday event in March 31, 2006. This event was
conducted at the Law Enforcement Training Center in Forsyth, GA, which is the state’s training
facility for State Troopers and Fire Fighters
- In May 2006 (*following the death of a city employee) a Metro-Atlanta OSHA representative
coordinated with the City of Byron, Georgia, to provided the Department of Public Workers
employees with training on the OSHA Excavation and Trenching Standard
- The Trenching Safety Training DVD developed by the SAFE Alliance was distributed by the ASSE
Trenching Taskforce Alliance
