I. Alliance Background

Overview: This alliance was formed between the participating agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with the purpose of promoting safe and healthful working conditions for construction industry trades through training, education, outreach, and communication to reduce back injuries, hand injuries, and lacerations.

Implementation Team Membership: Representatives from OSHA, American Subcontractors Association of Alabama

Contributors: Same as above.

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

Events
  • OSHA 10 – hour class conducted May 20 – 21, 2005
  • OSHA 10 – hour class planned for central Alabama on September 30 – October 1, 2005
Products
  • Enhanced 10 – hour training courses with focus on machine guarding for industrial settings. A review of injury data prior to the beginning of the Alliance revealed the most injuries involved hand and occurred within the workshops, during the fabrication of material for construction installations.
Outreach and Communication

Events
  • An anonymous survey was accomplished of ASA member companies to determine the most frequent types of injuries occurring so activities could be developed to focus on those issues.
  • OSHA and representatives met to discuss activities to achieve the goals.
Products
  • Planning was completed and activities assigned
  • Approximately 25 companies replied to the survey presented by ASA, providing information on numbers, types of injuries, body parts affected.
  • Information from the surveys was tallied by OSHA and ASA.

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2005
  • OSHA 10 Hour General Industry training planned for employees of American Subcontractors Association members, scheduled for May 20, 2005. In 2004 the ASA employer survey indicated that lacerations were occurring during assembly and fabrication of materials in the shop. Therefore, the OSHA – 10 Hour course will focus on enhanced machine guarding in the shop prior to the installation of fabricated components on construction sites.
