  1. Alliance Background

    Date Signed: April 16, 2003 and renewed February 3, 2005

    Overview

    OSHA, Alabama Associated General Contractors (AGC), Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA), Safe State of Alabama, Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 3M Corporation, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, Auburn University – T2 Center, Public Employees Safety Council of Alabama (PESCA), Alabama Power, Association Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Alabama, Asphalt Pavement Association, and Mobile Gas recognize the value of establishing a collaborative relationship in sharing their collective expertise to help foster a culture of injury and illness prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, especially in the area of work zone safety and “struck-by” hazards.

    • On July 18, 2007, an addendum to the Alliance was signed by Alabama Power.
    • On January 28, 2008, an addendum to the Alliance was signed by PESCA.
    • On June 16, 2008, an addendum to the Alliance was signed by Asphalt Pavement Association.
    • On July 16, 2009, an addendum to the Alliance was signed by Mobile Gas.

    Training and Education

    Event

    • Representatives from the Alabama Struck-by Alliance provided work zone safety training during the following events:
      • On April 9, 2009, during the 4th Annual Gulf Coast Construction in Mobile, Alabama
      • On March 28, 2009, during the Montgomery Construction Conference in Montgomery, AL
    Product

    • The curriculum which was developed for the work zone safety classes at the above referenced events.

    Outreach and Communication

    Events
    • Representatives from the Alabama Struck-by Alliance participated in Work Zone Safety Week, which was April 6 thru 12, 2009
    • Representatives from the Alabama Struck-by Alliance conducted work zone safety presentations for Whitaker Construction personnel.
    • Additionally, a representative of Whitaker Contracting conducts speeches at public schools focused on work zone safety. The company has also developed a brochure on the subject, which is provided to students.
    Product
    • Alabama DOT continues to distribution an auto litter bag, which features driver safety tips focused on road work zones, at the 32 rest areas in Alabama.
    • Lamar Outdoor Advertising continues to promote work zone safety on billboards across the State
    • Alabama DOT continues promote work zone safety on a public service announce (PSA) which is broadcast at the 32 rest areas in Alabama
    • A Mobile, AL, television station promoted Highway Work Zone Safety through several news stories during “Work Zone Safety Week.”


    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events
    • At the meeting on October 30, 2008, the Alliance group chose the slogan, “Put Down the Phone” for Work Zone Safety Week at the meeting. Lamar Advertising supported the Alliance by providing billboard space for work zone safety week. Billboards were targeted in areas of the state with the greatest amount of traffic. DOT will play videos in rest stops along the interstates reminding drivers to travel safely through road work zones and to “Put Down the Phone”. The Alliance group also accepted ALDOTs proposal to incorporation “R-U In-Text-icated” with “Put Down the Phone” in the ads for Work Zone Safety Week.
    • 3M representatives continue to work on a work zone hazard assessment product.
    • In April 2009, the Area Directors form the Birmingham and Mobile Area Offices developed and distributed a letter supporting National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.

  5. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2010 – 2011

    • Continue to support National Work Zone Safety Week, which is April 19-23, 2010. The group has selected the slogan “No Distractions – Just Drive.’
    • During the April 1, 2010, Annual Gulf Coast Safety Conference session will be conducted focused on work zone safety.
