I. Alliance Background Date Signed: April 16, 2003 and Renewed on February 3, 2005 Overview: OSHA, Alabama AGC, ARBA, Safe State, ALDOT, FHWA, 3M, Lamar and the Alabama T-2 Center are committed to sharing their collective expertise to help foster a culture of injury and illness prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, especially in the area of work zone safety and "Struck By" hazards. II. Implementation Team Membership and Contributors: OSHA, Alabama – Association General Contractors of America (Alabama AGC), Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA), Safe State of Alabama, Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 3M Corporation (3M), Lamar Outdoor Advertising (Lamar) and the Auburn University - Alabama Technology Transfer Center (Alabama T-2 Center). These meetings were conducted as scheduled on 5/11/06, Alabama Traffic Safety Summit -6/29/06, 10/06/06, 1/04/07 and 4/08/07 Evaluation Period: March 6, 2006 through April 30, 2007 III. Events and Products Training and Education Events T-2 Center at Auburn University provided work zone training for construction workers.   On April 17, 2007, the Alabama Struck-by Alliance group supported the "Rebuilding the Coast…Safely" Gulf Coast Construction Safety Conference in Mobile Alabama. Over 450 employers and employees participated in the event, which featured free safety and health training, as well as exhibitors. Products None Outreach and Communication Events On May 11, 2006, representative from the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Georgia Highway Contractors Association attended a meeting conducted by the Alabama Struck-by Alliance. The meeting was hosted by the Alabama T2 Center at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center.   On December 5, 2006, the Georgia Struck-by Alliance was formally signed, due to the support and assistance of the Alabama group. The signatories included OSHA, Georgia Division – Federal Highway Administration, the Georgia Department of Transportation, Georgia Highway Contractors Association, Georgia Utility Contractors Association, and the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, Georgia Tech Onsite Consultation Program and 3M Corporation.   During FY07 the alliance provided (10) billboards throughout the State of Alabama focusing on the "construction work zone" hazards exposing an estimated 330,828 individuals to the struck by message on a daily basis.   On June 29, 2006, the US DOT Federal Highway Administration conducted its annual Alabama Traffic Safety Summit in Montgomery, Alabama Products In 2006 a billboard funded by the alliance members was installed in Mississippi supporting the message of work zone safety during rebuilding efforts in the gulf coast. Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health Events April 2007 the alliance supported the National Work Zone Awareness by providing outreach materials and participating in a local news event highlighting hazards in the highway work zones. Products The alliance members have developed brochures highlighting work zone hazards to assist in awareness of struck-by hazards. IV. Results Refer to the events list above V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2008 Continue to develop the "hazard assessment" for work zones in FY 2008.   Participate in the "National Work Zone Week" in the State of Alabama.   Discussions will be conducted regarding the utilization of a grant to provide training on work zone hazards throughout the State of Alabama.
