Overview:

OSHA, AlabamaAGC, ARBA, Safe State, ALDOT, FHWA, 3M, Lamar and the Alabama T-2 Center are committed to sharing their collective expertise to help foster a culture of injury and illness prevention while sharing best practices and technical knowledge, especially in the area of work zone safety and "Struck By" hazards.

II. Implementation Team Membership and Contributors:

OSHA, Alabama – Association General Contractors of America (AlabamaAGC), Alabama Road Builders Association (ARBA), Safe State of Alabama, Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), 3M Corporation (3M), Lamar Outdoor Advertising (Lamar) and the Auburn University - Alabama Technology Transfer Center (Alabama T-2 Center). These meetings were conducted as scheduled on 11/01/05, Alabama Traffic Safety Summit 11/2/05, and 2/9/06.

April 16, 2005 through March 6, 2006

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

Events
  • Alliance Members have provided MUTCD part 6 training to an estimated 150 State DOT works and the compliance staff in the Mobile Office.
  • A total of 249 students received work zone training provided by the T-2 Center at Auburn University.

Outreach and Communication

Events
  • During FY05 the alliance provided (55) billboards throughout the State of Alabama focusing on the "construction work zone" hazards exposing an estimated 62,892,000 individuals to the struck by message.
  • Information regarding the success of the Struck by Alliance, as well as the DVD developed by the group was provided to OSHA Region VI - Oklahoma Area Office.
Products
  • In Jan 2006 a billboard funded by the alliance members was installed in Mississippi supporting the message of work zone safety during rebuilding efforts in the gulf coast.
Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

Events
  • April 2005 the alliance supported the National Work Zone Awareness by providing outreach materials and participating in news events highlighting hazards in the highway work zones.
Products
  • The alliance members have developed brochures highlighting work zone hazards to assist in awareness of struck-by hazards.

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2007
  • Continue to develop the "hazard assessment" for work zones in FY 2007.
     
  • Participate in the "National Work Zone Week" in the State of Alabama.
     
  • Discussions will be conducted regarding the development of a model Struck by Alliance or the expansion of the local agreement.
