ANNUAL ALLIANCE REPORT
March 17, 2009

WILMINGTON AREA OFFICE, REGION III
AND
THE DELMARVA SAFETY ASSOCIATION

OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association will provide the Association Members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employee’s health and safety with a specific focus on reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths among the Spanish speaking workforce. In addition, OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association will work together to develop training and education programs on occupational safety and health issues specifically targeted to employers of Hispanic workers and develop safety and health training for supervisors that addresses important cultural considerations and sensitivities.

Training & Education

Conducted training seminar “Cultural Barriers Toward Achieving Safe Workplaces,” March 17 and 18, 2008, which identified and addressed techniques for overcoming cultural barriers in order to achieve a safer workplace. In addition, several classes were provided on crane safety, first aid, fire extinguisher and work zone safety.


Outreach and Communication

Events


Exhibited at the 14th annual “Festival Hispano”in Millsboro, DE on August 24, 2008.

Participated in the “La Exitosa Expo & Job Fair in Harrington, DE on April 20, 2008. Provided pamphlets, and information concerning safety and health for the Hispanic workforce.

Exhibited at the 31st Annual Delmarva Safety Expo in Ocean City, Maryland on March 17-19, 2008.

Provided information and assistance at a display booth / exhibit for the 10th Annual Delaware Safe Summer Day in Camden, DE on June 14, 2008.


Products

Created a Hispanic Alliance Newsletter which is published semi-annually and promotes the national dialogue on workplace safety & health.

Provided a pocket reference guide in Spanish for the “Green Industry “to members of the Delaware and Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association.


Results

This Alliance is a success and has been recognized as the first Region III success story with an article published in the Alliance Quarterly Review, March 2006 edition. It met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period: educating employers and supervisors on safely transitioning Hispanic employees, developing resources and identifying and addressing techniques to overcome cultural barriers in order to achieve a safer working environment.

Annual Festival Hispano 14th with attendance estimated at 10,000

Several Cultural Sensitivity Seminars with approximately 50 employers in attendance

Compliance Officer (Wilmington Area Office, Staff) interviewed live for a broadcast on the radio station La Exitora 930AM in Harrington, DE.


Upcoming Milestones

Attempting to provide training and education to a number of advocates located throughout the Eastern Shore Area regarding safety and health issues for the Hispanic workforce.
