    Overview:
    The Roofing, Metal & Heating/OSHA Alliance goal is to develop and provide training and education programs for the roofing industry, to provide the Contact Members with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to fall, electrical and other roofing industry hazards.

  2. Implementation Team Meetings

    Alliance Quarterly Implementation Team Meeting held at the Roofing, Metal & Heating Associations meeting room located at Kelly Seafood on March 25, 2009. A schedule of meetings and outreach sessions for the second year of the Alliance were discussed.

  3. Events and Products

    Training and Education
     
    • September 23, 2009, Power Point Presentation- OSHA’s Philadelphia Area Office Compliance Assistance Specialist performed an outreach session for members of the Alliance. The session included a Power Point presentation covering: Fall Protection Requirements for Roofing Operations, Chemical Hazard Communication, and implementing Safety & Health Programs for the Roofing Industry. The outreach was attended by approximately 25 representatives of 15 Association member companies.
       
    • October 15, 2009, the Alliance Members provided a half day “OSHA Safety Seminar” hosted by Moulten Ladders for all of the Associations members. The Seminar focused on ladder safety and fall protection with professional guest speakers and interactive demonstrations. The event was attended by an estimated 40 representatives of various Roofing, Metal, & Heating Association members.
       
    • March 24, 2010, Area Director for OSHA’s Philadelphia Area Office provided an outreach training session for members of the Alliance. The session included a hand outs from a Power Point presentation covering scaffolding safety. The outreach session was attended by approximately 30 representatives from 17 member companies.
    Outreach and Communication
     
    • The Roofing, Metal & Heating Association membership publication “The Trade News” has recently began to publicize the Alliance’s activities and other applicable OSHA information for dissemination for its members. The association publication had four OSHA related articles written in the Alliance second year.
       
      • August 2009, Volume 95, Number 11, “Occupational Safety and Health” -This article discussed the Hazard Communication and Hand Tool OSHA requirements.
         
      • November 2009, Volume 95, Number 11, “Presidents Message” - This article discussed the recent success of the OSHA Alliance Safety seminar held on October 15, 2009.
         
      • December 2009- Volume 95, Number 12, “Usable Life of Fall Protection Equipment” - This article discussed establishing a proper inspection procedure for fall protection and life and use expectancy of various personal fall protection equipment.
         
      • December 2009- Volume 95, Number 12, “Plain language re-write of OSHA Instruction STD 3.1” The OSHA STD was provided.
    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
     
    • No activity in this area. The Roofing, Metal & Heating Association has been developed from a consortium of small businesses. Resources are limited in this area.

  4. Results

    The Alliance had a strong second year. The implementation team has continued to be enthusiastic about the unlimited potential of this cooperative program. The Association continues to garner new members as a result of the cooperative relationship being maintained with OSHA. The Alliance will continue to focus on assisting these small business associates in developing and promoting roofing industry specific safety programs suitable for the size of their businesses.

     
  5. Upcoming Milestones

    In the upcoming year the Alliance is scheduled to conduct a second Safety Seminar focused on the safety and health hazards associated with hot roof applications. Several companies’ representatives involved in the Alliance are slated to provide the training. The Alliance Implementation team is enthusiastically seeking out to extend the Alliance Agreement for an additional two years.
