Training and Education
EventsOn January 28, 2009, the American Red Cross and OSHA’s
Philadelphia Area Office conducted a “Navigating OSHA’s e-tool Website” webinar.
The webinar was the third and final session in a cooperatively developed series
of “Workplace Preparedness Online Seminars”. The seminar series focus was geared
towards developing enhanced and effective Safety & Health Management Systems for
small businesses. Topics covered in the series of seminars included: OSHA and
the Inspection Process; OSHA Compliance Impact on Small Business; Reducing
Workers Injuries; Understanding the Major Elements of a Successful Safety &
Health Program; and Navigating the OSHA Website. Over the final two years of the
Alliance there were approximately 200 safety and health representatives from
small businesses in the Southeastern PA Area that participated in the seminar
series.
On June 8, 2009, OSHA’s Philadelphia Area Office presented the Navigating OSHA’s
Website to approximately 50 representative of the OSHA/American Mushroom
Institute Alliance Group as part of their annual training breakout session for
their members. The Power Point Presentation which had been developed under the
Red Cross/OSHA Alliance was used as a tool to encourage employers in the
mushroom growing industry to develop Safety & Health Management Systems.
On July 23, 2009, the American Red Cross Southeastern PA Chapter conducted a
“Pandemic Flu Preparation for the Workplace” webinar attended by 29 local small
business representatives. The Southeastern PA Chapter was selected by the
American Red Cross National Office to pilot their training session as a result
of the experience gathered from the prior webinars delivered by the local
OSHA/Red Cross Alliance.
Promoting National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health
The Alliance continued to promote shared safety and heath agenda’s established
by the National Alliance Agreement between OSHA and the Red Cross.

- Upcoming Milestones
Over the last year of the Alliance Agreement the format for delivering selected
safety & health topics and materials had changed from a traditional classroom
style training setting to real time, web-based interactive presentations. The
change in the format was geared toward reaching a larger and more diversified
audience by making the information more accessible to a broader base of
recipients. These developed presentations have been made available and are being
used for outreach throughout Region III to assist employers in a variety of
industries in their improvement in the areas of safety and health.
The Alliance has come to its natural conclusion and has been deemed by all
participants as successful. Although the rime frame for the OSHA Cooperative
Program has been completed, OSHA’s Philadelphia Are Office and the Southeastern
PA Chapter of the Red Cross have agreed to maintain and nurture this mutually
beneficial relationship and will continue to work to promote both national and
local safety and health agenda through co-sponsored outreach.
