The Alliance was renewed on March 7, 2006. OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association have provided Association Members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources to help them protect employees’ health and safety with a specific focus on reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths among the Spanish speaking workforce. Additionally, the Alliance has developed occupational safety and health training programs for employers of Hispanic workers, specifically targeted to supervisors, that address important cultural considerations and sensitivities. The following individuals were part of the implementation team for this reporting year:

June 21, 2005 – Seaford, DE July 14, 2005 - University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DE Oct 18, 2005 – University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DE Jan 14, 2006 – Seaford, DE Conducted several cultural sensitivity classes with regard to the Hispanic workforce throughout the lower counties of Delaware covering injury rates for Hispanic workers and promoting both safety & health training for managers and supervisors of Hispanic employees. Publicized success stories in the training. Outreach and Communication
Exhibited at the 11th annual “Festival Hispano” in Millsboro, DE on August 21, 2005. Senator Thomas Carper attended this event. Training Seminar held on November 15, 2005 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, Salisbury, MD. This training session was conducted by Maryland Occupational Safety and Health as part of the OSHA / DSA Alliance and primarily focused on “Safety – Subcontracting and your Hispanic Workforce “. Exhibited at the 29th Annual Delmarva Safety Expo in Ocean City, Maryland on March 7-8, 2005. OSHA public service announcements were aired on Hispanic radio in Sussex County, Delaware Products Created an Hispanic Alliance Newsletter which is published quarterly. This Alliance can be considered a success. It has been recognized as the first Region III success story and subsequently had an article published in the Alliance Quarterly Review, March 2006 edition. It has met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period including educating employers and supervisors on safely transitioning Hispanic employers and motivating employers to learn Spanish. Radio interviews and public service announcements have reached thousands in the Del Marva Peninsula Region Festival Hispano 11th Annual – Attendance estimated at 11,000 Cultural Sensitivity Seminars – Several - approximately 40 employers in attendance Upcoming Milestones Attempting to conduct a simulcast training seminar throughout the three counties of Delaware involving members of the Delmarva Safety Association who employ Hispanics. Training will focus on fall protection in the roofing industry and landscape safety. |
