ALLIANCE ANNUAL REPORT
SMC BUSINESS COUNCILS
February 22, 2008

The Alliance was renewed on March 18, 2008. OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association will provide the Association Members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employee's health and safety with a specific focus on reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths among the Spanish speaking workforce. In addition, OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association did work together to develop training and education programs on occupational safety and health issues specifically targeted to employers of Hispanic workers and developed information for inclusion in Safety & Health training for supervisors that addressed important cultural considerations and sensitivities.

This report covers a one year period, starting March 2007 and ending March 2008.

Implementation Team Meetings
    6 August 2007– University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DE.
    15 October 2007- University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DE
    7 November 2007 – Wilmington, Delaware “Voices Without Borders”
    14 February 2008 – University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DE – Meeting held to discuss possible training of advocates on safety issues and government agencies resources that are available to the Hispanic workforce.
Training & Education

Conducted several Cultural Sensitivity Classes ( February 8 and 15, 2007 ) with regards to the Hispanic workforce throughout the counties of Delaware, covering injury rates for Hispanic workers, promote Safety & Health training for managers and supervisors of Hispanic employees and current success stories.

Events


Exhibited at the 13th annual “Festival Hispano”in Millsboro, DE on August 19, 2007.

Presentation made to the Delmarva Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers regarding current OSHA policies, etc. November 14, 2007

Exhibited at the 30th Annual Delmarva Safety Expo in Ocean City, Maryland on March 5-7, 2007.

Products

Created a Hispanic Alliance Newsletter which is published semi-annually and promotes the national dialogue on workplace safety & health.

Provided a pocket reference guide in Spanish for the “Green Industry “to members of the Delaware and Maryland Nursery and Landscape Association.

Results

This Alliance can be considered a success. It has been recognized as the first Region III success story and subsequently had an article published in the Alliance Quarterly Review, March 2006 edition. It has met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period; they were to educate employers and supervisors on safely transitioning Hispanic employers, developing resources and motivating employers to learn Spanish.

Festival Hispano 13th Annual – Attendance estimated at 11,000

Cultural Sensitivity Seminars – Several - approximately 40 employers in attendance

Upcoming Milestones

Attempting to conduct training seminars throughout the three counties of Delaware involving the local vocational schools and members of the Delmarva Safety Association, primarily the Delaware and Maryland Nursery and Landscape Associations. The training will focus on landscape safety and support the 2008 Teen Summer Job Program.
