The Alliance was signed on March 3, 2004. OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association will provide the Association Members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employee’s health and safety with a specific focus on reducing workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths among the Spanish speaking workforce. In addition, OSHA and the Delmarva Safety Association did work together to develop training and education programs on occupational safety and health issues specifically targeted to employers of Hispanic workers and developed information for inclusion in Safety & Health training for supervisors that addressed important cultural considerations and sensitivities. The following individuals were part of the implementation team: Vincent Soss – Acting Area Director – OSHAThe following individuals were contributors to this Alliance: Frank Dobson – Associated Builders & ContractorsThis report covers a one year period, starting March 3, 2004 and ending March 2005. Implementation Team Meetings May 12, 2004 – University of Delaware, Paradee Center, Dover, DEEvents and Products Training & Education Conducted a Cultural Sensitivity Seminar with regards to the Hispanic workforce, covering injury rates for Hispanic workers, promote Safety & Health training for managers and supervisors of Hispanic employees and current success stories. This event took place on Wednesday, Dec 1, 2004 at the University of Delaware, Paradee Center in Dover, DE. A second and similar Seminar was held on February 3, 2005 in Wilmington, DE. Both Seminars averaged 60 attendees from a diverse group of employers. Outreach and Communication Events Exposure on Hispanic TV “COMCAST-Con Sabor Hispano” – (with Hispanic flavor) Exhibited at the 10th annual Festival Hispano in Millsboro, DE on August 22, 2004. Governor Ruth Ann Minner attended this event. Exhibited at the 28th Annual Delmarva Safety Expo in Ocean City, Maryland on March 8-9, 2004. Products Created a Hispanic Alliance Newsletter. Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety & health. Events OSHA public service announcements were aired on Hispanic radio in Sussex County, Delaware. Results This Alliance can be considered a success. It has met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period; they were to educate employers and supervisors on safely transitioning Hispanic employers, developing resources and motivating employers to learn Spanish. Hispanic TV & Radio Interviews and public service announcements – thousands Festival Hispano 10th Annual – Attendance estimated at 9,000 Cultural Sensitivity Seminars (2) – 60 employers each Upcoming Milestones Attempt to have members of the Delmarva Safety Association, who employ Hispanics, establish benchmarks and measure progress towards goals of reducing injuries and fatalities in their Hispanic workforce. Renewal of Alliance will take place in the year 2006. |
