  1. Alliance Background

    Overview

    The purpose of this alliance is to provide members of the New York Metropolitan Chapter of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (Metro NY AIHA) and youths with information, guidance and access to training resources about workplace safety and health. Reducing and minimizing hazards for youths in the fast food industry by providing information on electrical safety, workplace violence, chemical safety and traffic safety.

  2. Implementation Team Meetings

    June 2007 Implementation team strategize on materials available and possible outreach activities for youth programs. Information and links to OSHA Youth web site provided.

    Nov. 2007 Implementation team reviews activities and plans to future outreach and compliance assistance activities.

    March 2008 Implementation team discusses activities and presentations which were completed and plan for future outreach.

    May 2008 Implementation team meets and reviews materials available, outreach completed and how to reach out to other areas to provide more information.

     
  3. Events and Products

    Training and Education

    Goals:
    • Work together to provide expertise in developing training and education programs for youths on electrical safety, workplace violence, chemical safety and traffic safety.
       
    • Materials and class presentation completed which is used for outreach to several high school programs. Use of power point presentations, internet and handouts used to provide youth workers with assistance and information.
       
    Events
    1. April 2008 – Presentation by Metro AIHA representative, Andrew Burgie, to 4 after-school internship classes at the High School for Environmental Studies.
       
    2. May 2008 – Presentation by Metro NY AIHA representative, Andrew Burgie, to 2 classes at rteh Wendel Holmes Intermediate School 204 Career Day.
       
    Products
    1. Powerpoint presentation for students prepared by Alliance team. Using several different resources – OSHA, NYS DOL, AIHA and NYCOSH
       
    2. OSHA Youth worker’s handouts, pamphlets and outreach materials provided to youth.
       
    Outreach and Communication

    Goals:
    • Speak, exhibit, or appear at local conferences, local meetings, or other similar events.
       
    Events
    1.  Presentation provided by CAS for Student Chapter of Metro NY AIHA meeting. Provided members with information on OSHA Cooperative Programs, general OSHA information and links to various topics on the OSHA web page. Presented information on the Youth Safety webpage.
       
    2. Materials provided to Metro AIHA meetings to provide OSHA general information
       
    Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Goals:
    • Raise others’ awareness of and demonstrate their own commitment to workplace safety and health.
       
    • Participate in forums, discussions or meetings on youth workplace safety.
       
    Products
    • Through the Associations’ website and Newsletter information is available to members and all to topics, safety information and alliance information. Link form website to OSHA’s website and various other Safety and Health topics and links.

  5. Upcoming Milestones

    Continue to work to provide information and outreach to youth groups on safety and health issues. The alliance has identified lab safety in schools as an item which material and outreach will be developed and presented.
