Overview

OSHA and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) formed the Alliance to provide an integrated and positive safety and health component for the FHWA’s Construction Career Days (CCD) program.

II. Implementation Team Meetings

The primary product of this alliance is OSHA participation in annual Construction Career Days events in Southern New England. These events are well established. Therefore, rather than using meetings as a forum to plan, communication usually takes place and information is exchanged via telephone and e-mail.

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

OSHA participated in Construction Career Days events in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island during the reporting period. The Connecticut offices distributed material on careers with OSHA and discussed construction safety hazards. The Methuen Office presented a “You be the CSHO” interactive accident investigation game at the Massachusetts event. Students toured a mock accident scene to determine the cause and possible violations. The Providence Office offered “You Be the OSHA Inspector” challenge in the Rhode Island. Students reviewed projected inspection photographs and identified hazards, particularly the four high hazards, silica, noise and lead. Providence distributed “Teen Summer Job Safety” stickers modeled after the national OSHA2008 teen worker “Build a Safe Work Foundation” campaign. These were used to remind each teen of his or her right to a safe and healthy workplace. At all of the events, teen worker booklets and other safety literature were available to the attendees.

Outreach and Communication

The Construction Career Days events provided a valuable opportunity for OSHA to network with vocational school instructors.

V. Upcoming Milestones

The Area Offices involved in this alliance will continue to participate in the annual Construction Career days events; however, it is the consensus of the offices involved that an alliance is not necessary to this participation and that the current alliance should be allowed to expire. The Alliance concluded on July 27, 2008.
