Most OSHA industrial hygienists would like to have direct-reading instruments for immediate assessment of exposure in the field. Those of you that are Star Trek fans will recognize a tricorder, a direct-reading instrument that can analyze almost any substance. We do not have the technology for analyzing quartz immediately in the workplace, but who knows what the future holds.
