How IR Works

As shown, the molecule has a vibrational movement which allows for absorption of light energy. In theory, no two compounds have the same absorption spectrum. In practice, this is not the case; one of the weaknesses of infrared spectroscopy is the ability of other molecules of similar structure to also absorb light at similar wavelengths. Silicates with a similar tetrahedral structure can interfere with the determination of quartz.
