Quartz - Analytical Methodologies

A variety of analytical methods have been used to assess occupational exposures to airborne concentrations of quartz in the workplace and to characterize quartz content in bulk materials. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been actively involved in using, evaluating, and advancing analytical methodology for determinations of quartz. Other countries have also progressed in their attempt to assess and categorize a substance which is very prevalent in mining and general industry. In this slide show, the progress of quartz analysis in the United States is presented, methods used internationally are discussed, results of an international survey of which methods are used is displayed, and future enhancements are suggested.
