OSHA ANNOUNCES METALWORKING FLUIDS STANDARDS ADVISORY COMMITTEE PUBLIC MEETING JULY 7-9
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will hold the final public meeting of the Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee on July 7-9 in Washington, D. C.
The committee advises the Secretary of Labor on issues concerning the protection of workers from occupational exposure to metalworking fluids. There are 1.2 million workers engaged in the manufacture of automobiles, farm equipment, aircraft, heavy machinery, and other hardware that are exposed to these machining fluids. There is substantial evidence of serious health effects, such as occupational asthma, hypersensitivity, pneumonitis, dermatitis and cancer, that can result from this exposure.
The MWFSAC committee will discuss its draft final report to OSHA. The report is expected to include recommendations for OSHA action and best practices for working in the metalworking fluid environment, including medical surveillance, training, and exposure monitoring. The Committee intends to complete and ratify its final report to OSHA at the meeting. OSHA will present a risk assessment update and report on data collected by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).
Written data, views, or comments for consideration by the committee may be submitted to Dr. Peter Infante, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA, Directorate of Health Standards Programs, Metalworking Fluids Standards Advisory Committee, Room N-3718, 200 Constitution Avenue, N.W., Washington, D. C. 20210. Twenty-five copies are needed.
All interested persons are invited to attend. Anyone wishing to make an oral presentation to the committee should also notify Dr. Infante in writing. The request should specify the amount of time desired, the capacity in which the person will appear and a brief outline of the presentation. Requests to make oral presentations will be granted if time permits. Individuals with disabilities wishing to attend should contact Theresa Berry at (202) 693-1999 (Fax: 202-693-1634) no later than June 28, 1999, to obtain appropriate accommodations.
The meeting will be held at the Capital Hilton Hotel, 16th and K streets, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. Telephone: 202-393-1000.
The committee will meet from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. July 7; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. July 8; and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on July 9.
