OSHA finds workers again exposed to safety and health hazards
at Camden, New Jersey, warehouse
Magnetic Metals Corp. fined $53,900 for 15 federal violations

Employer Name and Location: Magnetic Metals Corp., located at 1900 Hayes Avenue in Camden, New Jersey, manufactures soft magnetic materials for products including motors and transformers.

Date Investigation Initiated: The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration initiated an inspection on Dec. 4, 2014, as part of the agency's site specific targeting program for industries with high injury and illness rates.

Investigation Findings: Magnetic Metals Corp. was cited for a total of 15 violations-- including three repeat--that involve not placing devices on machinery to prevent the sudden startup or movement of equipment during service and maintenance, a procedure known as lockout/tagout.

A repeat violation exists when an employer previously has been cited for the same or a similar violation of a standard, regulation, rule or order at any other facility in federal enforcement states within the last five years. The company was previously cited for similar violations in 2010.

Magnetic Metals Corp. has 15 business days from receipt of citations and proposed penalties to comply, request a conference with OSHA's area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Quote: "During the servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment, the unexpected startup or release of stored energy can kill or cause serious injuries to employees," said Paula Dixon-Roderick, director of OSHA's Marlton Area Office. "Employers need to take the appropriate steps to ensure that workers are protected from this type of hazard."

Proposed penalties: $53,900
