US Labor Department's OSHA forms alliance with Mexican
Consulate in Arizona to promote workers' safety and health
April 27 signing ceremony marks shared commitment to critical protections
PHOENIX – The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration today signed an alliance with the Consulate General of Mexico in Arizona to establish a collaborative relationship that aims to keep workers safe and healthy on the job. The goal of the alliance is to increase access to education and training resources that promote workers' rights and employers' responsibilities.
"This alliance reflects the steady commitment that is needed to strengthen collaborative approaches among all stakeholders toward promoting workers' safety and health," said Ken Nishiyama Atha, OSHA's regional administrator in San Francisco. "We are delighted that by joining forces we will help save lives, prevent injuries and raise awareness within the Latino community in Arizona."
Alliance participants will develop training and education programs for Mexican nationals employed throughout Arizona in general industry and construction. Some of the safety and health issues that will be covered include unguarded or inadequately guarded machinery, the unexpected energizing of machinery during maintenance, heat stress, exposure to hazardous chemicals and falls from elevated work surfaces.
The signing ceremony was held at the Consulate of Mexico located in Douglas, Ariz. The alliance was signed by Zachary Barnett, director of OSHA's Phoenix Area Office, and Victor Manuel Trevino Escudero, consul general of Mexico, who also is based in Phoenix.
Through the Alliance Program, OSHA works with unions, consulates, trade and professional organizations, faith- and community-based organizations, businesses and educational institutions to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. The purpose of each alliance is to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities.
