US Labor Department's OSHA to co-sponsor Hispanic Family
Health and Safety Fair in Buffalo on June 25
Free, family-friendly Niagara Street event to provide education and fun
BUFFALO – Helping Western New York's Hispanic workers and their families identify and prevent health and safety hazards at work and at home is the goal of the 2011 Hispanic Family Health and Safety Fair, to be held Saturday, June 25, in Buffalo.
Now in its 10th year, this free event is designed for the entire family. Workers will be able to attend Spanish-language training sessions on identifying and correcting hazards in construction, electrical work, health care, fast food restaurants and landscaping, as well as watch a workers' rights skit and learn from courses on heat stress, fire safety and emergency preparedness. Children can attend sessions on identifying household hazards and fire safety, and participate in hands-on training for portable fire extinguishers. Health and wellness screenings will focus on diabetes, blood pressure, asthma, lead, nutrition, osteoporosis, sleep apnea, sexually transmitted diseases, multiple sclerosis and cholesterol. Games and other activities will be available to entertain children.
"This event provides working people and their families with a day of education and enjoyment," said Arthur Dube, area director for the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration in Buffalo, which is co-sponsoring the fair with a coalition of area groups. "Last year, 3,000 people attended and obtained information that can enhance and perhaps even save their lives. It's a marvelous and productive way for a family to spend a Saturday afternoon together."
