US Department of Labor's OSHA forms alliance with Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater, Texas
Focus is on wind energy industry
SWEETWATER, Texas -- Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater has signed an alliance with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration focusing on safety in the wind energy industry.
"OSHA welcomes this opportunity to join with TSTC toward emphasizing awareness of hazardous working conditions in the wind energy industry," said Dean McDaniel, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas, Texas.
TSTC owns and operates its own two mega watt wind turbine in conjunction with its Wind Energy Training Program. First semester students are able to climb a 262 foot turbine and experience the excitement of the environment in which they are preparing to work.
TSTC has one of the largest wind energy technology programs in the U.S. with a current enrollment of more than 250 students. The college hosts students from Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Missouri, Washington, Vermont, Delaware, Michigan, Florida, Maine, Oklahoma and New Mexico. The program was opened in the spring semester of 2007.
Through its Alliance Program, OSHA works with groups committed to safety and health, including businesses, trade or professional organizations, unions and educational institutions, to leverage resources and expertise to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, and share information with employers and employees to help prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities in the workplace. OSHA and the organization sign a formal agreement with goals that address training and education, outreach and communication, and promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health.
