U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA recognizes U.S. Postal Service's Shawnee Mission Main Post Office for safety and health excellence

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced that the U.S. Postal Service's Shawnee Mission Main Post Office in Shawnee Mission, Kan., has earned membership in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) at the highest, or "star," level. A recognition ceremony will be held September 27 at the Shawnee Mission Main Post Office.

The Shawnee Mission Main Post Office's 240 employees distribute mail to about 400,000 addresses covering approximately 210 square miles.

"The U.S. Postal Service's Shawnee Mission Main Post Office has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said Charles E. Adkins, OSHA's regional administrator in Kansas City. "The facility's outstanding efforts have included management commitment to safety and health, and employee involvement in safety and health programs."

OSHA's VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. Employers in the VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than others in their respective industries. The program currently encompasses 1,793 worksites with companies from more than 280 industries.

Information kits about the VPP application and approval processes are available from the VPP manager in OSHA's Kansas City Regional Office, who can be reached at (816) 283-8745.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
