Los Lunas Post Office earns 'Star' for safety and health from U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA

LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today welcomed the U.S. Postal Service's Los Lunas Carrier Annex into its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) at the highest, or "Star," level during a ceremony at the facility on Canal Street.

"The Los Lunas Annex is the first U.S. Postal Service site in New Mexico to achieve "Star" status," said Dean McDaniel, OSHA's regional administrator in Dallas. "The facility's outstanding efforts in effective safety and health management include achieving an injury and illness rate that is 63 percent below the national average for the industry."

The Los Lunas Carrier Annex delivers and dispatches mail for the township of Los Lunas and is the primary sorting annex for Valencia County and the Tome area. The annex employs 40 employees and two rural route contract carriers in Los Lunas.

The Los Lunas Carrier Annex joins an elite corps of nearly 1,800 worksites in more than 270 industries nationwide that have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high quality worksite hazard analysis; prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before an entity can apply to join the VPP.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
