WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced in today's Federal Register that it is accepting applications from interested nonprofit organizations to become OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers.
"The demand for our safety and health training gives us the opportunity to partner with educational institutions across the country," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "That is why we are now seeking new partners to compliment existing education centers. These centers will allow us to significantly increase the amount of people who receive training each year by conducting specific OSHA Training Institute courses at sites across the country."
The OSHA Training Institute in Arlington Heights, Ill., is OSHA's primary training provider. OTI conducts more than 100 short-term courses and seminars covering OSHA standards, policies, and procedures. These courses are designed for individuals responsible for enforcing or directly supporting the Occupational Safety and Health Act. The courses are offered to private sector employers and employees, and federal personnel from agencies other than OSHA. The institute's primary responsibility is to federal and state compliance officers and state consultation program staff. Private sector and federal personnel from agencies other than OSHA receive training from the OTI on a space available basis. OTI Education Centers augment OTI's training capacity and offer training throughout the country.
OTI Education Centers do not receive funding from OSHA. Tuition and fees are used to support the Education Centers' training programs. The number of organizations selected will be determined according to the qualifications of the applicants and their ability to serve their regional populations. Colleges, universities, or other nonprofit training organizations will be selected based upon their ability to conduct OSHA courses for private sector and federal personnel from agencies other than OSHA.
