West Monroe Post Office earns star' for safety and health from U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA

WEST MONROE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today welcomed the U.S. Postal Service West Monroe Post Office into the prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) at the highest, or "star," level during a ceremony at the 601 Wood Street facility.

"The West Monroe Post Office has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA's acting regional administrator Frank Strasheim in Dallas, Texas. "The company's outstanding efforts include achieving an injury and illness rate that is well below the national average for the industry."

The West Monroe Post Office provides full retail customer service operations five days a week, has a 24-hour lobby with access to 2,100 postal boxes, and has 20 city and 21 rural mail delivery routes. The facility has 84 postal employees who receive, sort and distribute domestic and foreign packages and mail.

More than 1,700 worksites in more than 270 industries nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Requirements include a high degree of management support and employee involvement; a high quality worksite hazard analysis, prevention and control programs; and comprehensive safety and health training for all employees. Each of these elements must be effective, in place and in operation for at least one year before a company can apply to join the VPP.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
