More than 8,000 students trained over past four years
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Lehigh Construction Group Inc. have renewed for another two years their successful alliance to teach construction safety to students in western New York vocational schools and colleges.
Since it was first signed in May 2003, the alliance has trained more than 8,000 students in the fundamentals of construction safety and health. Training has covered the importance of workplace safety, recognition of the major hazards in construction work and building a safety culture within an organization. The instructional base for alliance safety and health training now includes building trades students and contractors on the Seneca Nation of Indians reservations in Salamanca and Irving, N.Y.
"OSHA and Lehigh remain committed to cooperative and proactive efforts to advance safety and health," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. "Providing the region's newest construction employees with a strong grounding in safety and health will pay off in fewer injuries, greater productivity and safer workplaces."
The alliance is also providing training to students in construction engineering and project estimating and design curricula at area colleges so that they learn to incorporate safety and health needs into a project's estimates and design costs.
"Building safety and health costs into project estimates is good business," said Arthur Dube, OSHA's area director for western New York. "Recognizing the importance of addressing safety and health early in a project will help prevent additional costs in financial and human capital down the line."
The alliance renewal was signed by David Knauss, president, and Thomas Glomb, vice president, of Lehigh Construction Group Inc., and by Patricia Clark and Arthur Dube for OSHA. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L.
