GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has renewed its successful alliance with the Sociedad de Profesionales de Prevencion de Accidentes de Puerto Rico/Society of Professionals for the Prevention of Accidents (SPPAPR) to enhance safety and health for workers in Puerto Rico.
First signed in 2004, the alliance has provided SPPAPR members and other safety and health professionals with information, guidance and training to help them protect employees' safety and health and assist them in implementing effective accident prevention management systems. The training addresses falls, work in confined spaces, indoor air quality, noise exposure, workplace violence, ergonomics and the development of comprehensive accident prevention systems.
"The initial results of this alliance are promising, as is its potential," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "To date, more than 470 occupational safety and health professionals have received training and information on such topics as cranes, noise in construction, indoor air quality and workplace violence."
"We look forward to continuing to work with SPPAPR to equip Puerto Rico's workers and employers with the tools to identify and prevent occupational hazards," said Jose Carpena, OSHA's area director for Puerto Rico. "Knowledge and prevention are vital in reducing occupational illnesses and injuries and ensuring safer and healthier workplaces."

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing effort to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. Since 2001, OSHA has created more than 453 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
The SPPAPR is a nonprofit, professional safety organization comprised of more than 400 members from the public, private and federal sectors. The society has been instrumental in promoting awareness on issues concerning occupational safety and health and offers quality training for the development of professionals with expertise in the area of accident prevention.
