CINCINNATI, Ohio -- "We count on these brave men and women to risk their lives while trying to save our own, or while protecting our property from damage, and it's only fitting that we do all we can to assure their safety while they perform this heroic work."
So said Michael Connors, administrator of the Chicago regional office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as that agency and the Hamilton County Fire Chiefs Association established an alliance dedicated to protecting county firefighters' health and safety on the job. The alliance is the first in the Chicago Region between professional firefighters and OSHA.
The two groups signed the formal alliance Friday, March 17 at the Evendale, Ohio, fire station. The initiative will emphasize safe practices and preventing exposure to fire ground hazards as well as addressing specific life safety issues. OSHA and the association will develop training materials and will begin a regular process of information sharing and outreach to inform individual firefighters of best practices in keeping themselves safe while performing extremely hazardous duty.
OSHA has created more than 400 alliances since 2001 with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace. They are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with employers, trade associations, community groups and labor unions, as well as consulates.
