Form Alliance to Reduce Trenching Hazards
Alliance Signing Ceremony Scheduled for Oct. 22

ATLANTA -- In a continuing effort to protect Metro Atlanta workers from trenching accidents, the U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has formed an alliance with the American Society of Safety Engineers, Georgia Chapter, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Safety, Health and Environmental Technology Division. The signing ceremony is scheduled for Fri., Oct. 22, at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center.

The Trench Safety Task Force Alliance will provide trench safety best practices material and resource information to construction contractors and other employers involved in trenching and excavation operations and bring together all interested parties to forge innovative solutions to reduce safety hazards at these work sites.

"Over the past five years, OSHA has investigated 21 fatal trenching accidents in the Metro Atlanta area," said Gei-Thae Breezley, OSHA's Atlanta-East area director. "Safe work practices could have prevented these tragedies."

"The alliance is part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve worker safety and health through cooperative partnerships," said Andre C. Richards, Atlanta-West area director. He added that major area construction companies, MARTA and insurance agencies also support the alliance.
