OSHA, Dig Safely New York and NYS Dept. of Labor Team Up for Safety
ALBANY, NY -- Protecting construction workers from excavation hazards is the goal of a new alliance forged by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Dig Safely New York Inc. and the New York State Department of Labor's On-Site Consultation Program.
OSHA alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships.
The purpose of the alliance is to provide excavators and other construction contractors with information, guidance and training resources to protect the safety and health of workers on the job. Alliance participants will work together to develop training and education programs about excavation hazards and provide their expertise in communicating this information to employers and employees.
"This alliance is an example of Secretary Chao's commitment to find cooperative ways to improve health and safety for all workers," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "We want to help educate contractors and their workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job."
Established in 1968, Dig Safely New York is a not-for-profit organization serving New York State beyond New York City and Long Island. Its One-Call Center in Syracuse is a communications hub relaying pending excavation plans to facility-owning members whose buried services may be directly affected by the planned excavation. Their mission is to comply with governing regulations to protect the public and prevent damage to underground facilities through education and quality communications between excavators and underground facility operators in an efficient, user-friendly, cost-effective manner.
Alliance signatories for OSHA were regional administrator Patricia K. Clark and the OSHA area directors for Albany, Buffalo, Syracuse and Tarrytown. Signing for Dig Safely New York, Inc., were Executive Director Robert Foster and Operations Manager Larry Bishop, and field representatives for the Hudson Valley as well as for eastern, western and central New York. Signing for the New York State On-Site Consultation Program was director James Rush.
