and Educate Western NY's Future Construction Workers
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Promoting safe and healthful working conditions for future members of western New York's construction industry is the goal of a newly established alliance between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Buffalo area office and the Orchard Park-based Lehigh Construction Group, Inc.
The alliance will train and educate the region's high school and college level construction students in construction hazards and the best practices companies have implemented to reduce those hazards, explained Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator. The training will both protect students' safety and health and raise their awareness of the value of safety in construction.
"Alliances such as this are the cornerstone in our efforts to enlist the business community's help in making sure workplaces are safe and healthy, now and in the future," said Clark. "We must all work together to reduce injuries and illnesses in the workplace across the board."
"This model provides a new collaborative approach to managing safety and health that will assist both OSHA and Lehigh in having a higher caliber, better trained workforce in western New York," said David Knauss, president of Lehigh Construction Group Inc.
OSHA's Buffalo area office will work with Lehigh to jointly develop and disseminate information and training on safety excellence and management through school job fairs and events, print and electronic media, including links from OSHA's and Lehigh's websites, and sharing of construction industry best practices to students enrolled in the building trades curriculums in vocational schools in western New York.
A joint OSHA/Lehigh implementation team will meet on a regular schedule to share information on activities and results in achieving the goals of the alliance. The alliance will remain in effect for one year.
The alliance was signed May 15, at the Western New York Safety Conference in Grand Island. Signatories are Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator; Art Dube, OSHA's area director in Buffalo; David Knauss, president of Lehigh Construction Group Inc.; and Thomas Glomb, vice president of Lehigh Construction Group, Inc.
