Accident Investigation Summary
Summary Nr: 202082558Event: 03/26/2014Worker Cuts Hand In Fall From Scaffold
On March 26, 2014, Employee #1 was part of a four-worker team employed by a construction contractor doing business as Goodfellas Contractual. They were installing the metal frame for walls at a commercial building. Employee #1 was working on top of a mobile scaffold that measured 7 feet 1 inch high by 6 feet 1.5 inches wide by 7 feet 1.5 inches long. Employee #1 lost his balance and began to fall. He tried to arrest his fall by grabbing the 20-gauge light-weight metal studs. His attempt was unsuccessful, and he fell to the ground below, a fall height of 7 feet. Emergency services were called, and Employee #1 was transported to the hospital, admitted, and treated for severe lacerations to the hand. His injuries required surgery. This event was investigated by North Carolina OSHA. The investigation determined that the mobile scaffold was not equipped with guardrails. Employee #1 was not using fall protection when he fell.
