Accident Investigation Summary
Summary Nr: 111533.015Event: 08/30/2018Employee Amputates Two Fingers And Partially Amputates A Thi
At 10:15 a.m. on August 30, 2018, an employee was operating a circular saw (DeWalt Cordless Circular Saw) to remove a section of water-damaged wood located next to a shower drain. The employee began to make a plunge cut into the plywood by using his right hand to hold the circular saw and his left hand to retract the blade guard. The employee then pulled the trigger of the saw to get the blade up to speed and began the cut. Once the saw blade entered the plywood, the employee removed his left hand from the guard and placed it near where the employee was cutting. The saw kicked back and struck the employee's left hand, amputating two fingers and partially amputating a third. The employee was transported by emergency medical personnel to a local hospital for treatment.
