On September 17, 2008, Employee #1, a mechanic and farm worker, was changing knives on a 15-ft-wide Loftness Flail mower weighing approximately 4,400 pounds. The mower was attached to a tractor and the tractor's hydraulics assisted in elevating the mower slightly. Employee #1 placed and used a separate jack with a load capacity of 7,000 pounds on the side of the mower he was working on. He estimated the mower was elevated between 6 and 12 inches. He was underneath the mower with his head pointing to the back of the mower when he felt the ground vibrate. The mower came down onto his body, pinning him. The vibration might have been from a rice harvester by a coworker in the general area. Employee #1 sustained soft tissue contusions and was hospitalized. | |||||||
