On July 24, 2007, Employee #1, an oiler and maintenance worker at a saw mill, was assisting with changing the knives on a horizontal feed chipper. The chipper controls were locked out. A millwright was rotating the chipper head by hand to check the clearance of the knives to the anvil. Employee #1 was watching the knives pass the anvil to check proper adjustment. For an unknown reason, the employee placed his right hand below the anvil as the chipper head was rotated. The sharp knife amputated the top portion of his right index finger. Employee #1's injury did not require hospitalization. The employee stated he knew better and could not explain why he placed his hand near the moving chipper head. | |||||||
