Employee #1, a carpenter, was working alone making a diagonal cut on a 1 by 6 piece of pine with a powered hand-held circular saw. He states that the board suddenly exploded into several pieces. The circular saw kicked back, nearly amputating Employee #1's left thumb. The saw was equipped with a telescopic blade guard.
