At approximately 4:10 p.m. on January 7, 1993, Employee #1 was standing by a 1/2 inch lowering line that was wrapped around a tree and observing tree top removal by a fellow employee. When the other employee made a backcut, the tree top swung around 180 degrees, slapping a dead snag that was approximately 87 feet tall with a list of 12 degrees toward Employee #1. The dead snag broke off approximately 20 feet above the ground and fell toward Employee #1. Employee #1 was hit by the snag and suffered multiple injuries. Employee #1 was in a very hazardous location where he should not have been; only one avenue of escape was available and that was closed off by the falling snag.
