At 1:30 p.m. on May 13, 2020, Employee #1, a 63-year-old employee , was working at a grape vineyard in Acampo, CA. He and some coworkers were suckering grapevin es -- thinning shoots by hand. They were working from east to west. They were ab out 30 plants in from the end of the row, approximately 90 meters (300 feet) fro m where bathrooms were located. The employee had been working next to his wife. The employee was walking to the bathroom. His wife turned around and saw that th e employee had passed out and was lying on the ground about 30 meters (100 feet) away. Coworkers ran to aid the employee. They carried him to the end of the row , called emergency medical services, and started CPR. A coworker was sent to dir ect emergency services into the vineyard. The fire department and an ambulance a rrived, and those personnel took over. The employee was taken to St. Joseph's Me dical Center in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:57 p.m . that same day. The employee died of natural causes, in this case a cardiac arr est. The Division learned of the incident at 3:30 p.m. that same day, when the e mployer reported it to the Modesto District Office. DOSH opened an inspection on the following day. Both the employer and the employee's coworkers did not notic e anything wrong or different with the employee. Employee had not complained abo ut not feeling well. The temperature at time of the incident was 23 degrees Cels ius (73 degrees Fahrenheit). It peaked later in the day, at around 2:55, at 24 d egrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit). Water and shade were readily available, and the workers had been trained about heat illness prevention.
