At approximately 8:40 a.m. on or about October 31, 2018, a Manitowoc Lattice Boom Crane (Model 4100, 230 ton) was hoisting ten sheets of metal siding with two Rockford 16 nylon straps in a basket configuration (basket max load: 12,800 pounds). The sheets were approximately 24 feet long, 3 feet wide, and weighed approximately 100 pounds each for a total load of 1,000 pounds. As the crane was swinging over a section of a building, the edge of the metal siding material cut through the nylon straps, thus resulting in the load falling in a vertical position approximately 20 feet through the building roof causing property damage to the roof and finishes within the building. The areas within the swing radius were barricaded and cleared prior to lifting/hoisting the materials. No sling protection to prevent exposure to sharp edges was utilized prior to the incident occurring. The crane operator and rigger were certified. There was significant property damage but no injuries were sustained.
