Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of drowning: Location: 606 Foxworth Lane in Holmes Beach (FL). a) employees were exposed to a drowning hazard, on or about 07/14/11. An employee, who could not swim was required to use a backpack style leaf blower to clean the backyard of a residential property in close proximity to a 6-foot deep pool, and a water canal on the south side of the property. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is for the employer to: (1) have a competent person inspect and evaluate hazards of working near water, including fall hazards that can cause an employee fall into a nearby body of water and provide personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate; and (2) train employees in safe work procedures to prevent falling into water and in basic water skills.
