Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to an employee in that an employee was exposed to: a fall hazard while being elevated on a work platform without fall protection: a) On or about 11/27/11 at 47 Storer Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10309. An employee was elevated by a forklift approximately 8 to 9 feet while standing on a wooden pallet without fall protection. The employee fell to the ground below. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD, AMONG OTHER MEANS, WOULD BE UTILIZING ONLY PLATFORMS DESIGNED FOR ELEVATING PERSONNEL WITH FORKLIFTS. THESE PLATFORMS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH IN ANSI/ASME B56.6 1987 SUCH AS BUT NOT LIMITED TO, FALL PROTECTION FOR EMPLOYEES. IN ADDITION, TRAIN ALL EMPLOYEES IN THE HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH IMPROPER ELEVATING METHODS AND THE PROPER USE APPLICATION AND USE OF SAFETY PLATFORMS.
