Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to unsecured steel bar joists: a) 6175 Guardian Gateway, Aberdeen, MD: On or about 09/14/10, Upon releasing the lever load binders and removing the lashing chains from a load of steel bar joists, which were resting on the flatbed portion of a tractor trailer, a driver was struck when two of the bar joists fell from the top of the load. NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct this hazard is to adopt and enforce the safe work procedures from the Technical Digest 9, "Loading and Shipping; Receiving, Unloading and Storing" of steel joist products, issued by the Steel Joist Institute. Another feasible means of abatement would be to provide additional bands or heavier gauge metal bands with a softener at the outer core edge of each bundle of joists, so as to prevent joists from breaking loose of the bundle in the event of de-nesting.
