Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious phyical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by the load. 8001 Mercier St., New Orleans, LA: On or about April 18, 2011, the employer did not ensure that safe procedures were followed when lifting an 1800 sq. ft. single family home on slab. The house was raised but before cribbing could be installed the house shifted and collapsed. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1) Ensure that each grade beam under the house is supported by an adequate amount of piling. 2) Develop and implement living/moving procedures and ensure lifting/moving plan is followed. 3) Evaluate the impact of other work in the area.
